CIC's NCTA Outreach May 5, 2007

Just off the world famous strip in Las Vegas, Nev., 1,682 volunteers (many from CIC's ranks) came from more than 100 churches to serve 3,019 guests at this special Cinco de Mayo outreach at Baker Park. While parents availed them of many of the critical needs services offered at the event, children were entertained with over 50 different types of carnival games and inflatables. In addition to a Kids Zone, this outreach featured a special Teen Zone where teens enjoyed a basketball tournament, wall painting, inflatables, great music and drinking smoothies while relaxing in a coffee house type atmosphere.

Guests were able to receive free dental exams and on-the-spot care. Many of them said it was the first time they had been able to visit a dentist since they have not dental care plan and little money for such "extravagances" that many of us take for granted. Continued, below photos...

...One dentist found that in one family there were several with serious and health threatening abscesses. She immediately took the family to her office in her own car, pulled the problem teeth and treated the problem. She then brought the family back to the event. The dentist was so moved that she asked the pastor of the church next to the park if she could set up a weekly free dental clinic to the disadvantaged in the church. The church agreed and the CIC-COH outreach and it's impact continues.

Medical screening was available and follow up care planned for those needing it.

The Hispanic Lions Club of Las Vegas provided free eye exams and vouchers for glasses for the guests that needed them. Again, many were in need but they couldn't afford to do anything about the need, until CIC and Convoy of Hope arrived to provide the resources. Continued...

"Mountains" of bagged groceries were offered the guests as they left the event grounds.

...Many of the Las Vegas' social service divisions were present to help in job searches and to provide additional resources for the guests to get plugged into organizations that would help them improve their plight.

In addition to the essential services mentioned above guests were given multiple bags of free groceries as they left the event. They were able to receive free haircuts/hairstyling, nail care and a lunch of hot dogs, nachos, juice boxes and water.

People who requested spiritual counseling were directed to a prayer tent. In the prayer tent, more than 2,000 guests prayed with volunteers who spent time with them and offered counseling to guests who requested it. Over 300 of these guests committed their lives to Christ at the event. Thirty-two churches will follow up with these guests and connect them not only to a church, but also to individuals who will continue to help them. Continued...

...Las Vegas Mayor, Oscar Goodman, spent over an hour walking the site, taking time to interact one-on-one with guests and also spending time in the grocery area, where he handed groceries to the guests as they left. Mayor Goodman also spent a large amount of time talking with Convoy of Hope Outreach Director, Michael Redmon about hosting events like this in other parts of the city. Goodman commented, "This is the type of thing that more people and organizations need to be doing to help those in need in our city." Mayor Goodman also presented Convoy of Hope with a special proclamation, declaring May 5, 2007 "Convoy of Hope Day" in the city of Las Vegas.

Also in attendance at the outreach was Nevada's U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley. She recognized the impact of the event, saying, "this event sends a message to this community that the Church and government can work together and bring hope to hurting people." Continued...
